"This is my letter to the world": ES students respond to Emily Dickinson's manuscripts
From 28th March 2025
This exhibition showcases ES students' textual art work.
Emily Dickinson wrote more than 1700 poems. Only 10 of these were printed during her lifetime - in all likelihood without her permission. Dickinson wrote and preserved her poetry in manuscripts: In hand-bound books called fascicles, in letters to her family and friends, and in hybrid visual and textual compositions using the folded planes of repurposed envelopes. After studying these envelope-writings over the course of a semester, nine ES students were asked to respond in kind. Their only requirement: that their texts reimagine Dickinson’s defiance of 19th-century print technology for today’s digital culture.
