No deal situation for a R&P agreement with Wolters Kluwer for 2025

The negotiations with Wolters Kluwer for the continuation of the Read&Publish agreement for LWW journals have not yet led to a result. The Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries is still in favour of continuing the agreement from 2025.

The current agreement with Wolters Kluwer expires on 31 December 2024. As the contract negotiations have not yet led to any results, preparations were put in place for a scenario without an agreement from 2025. This will affect reading access to articles in LWW journals and Open Access publishing in the publisher's journals.

Reading access and alternative access

Access to journal content may not be deactivated immediately and a "grace period" will apply. However, as soon as access is deactivated by the publisher, the journal content published from 2025 onwards would no longer be accessible. Only content published between 2016 and 2024 would still be available - with the exception of content from some society journals.

We have put together some alternatives that members of UZH and the affiliated university hospitals can use to access the articles they need. Browser extensions and search engines that help you find Open Access versions can be found on our website: No Access? Your Options

In addition, the interlibrary loan service of the UB and the ZB is available to you free of charge for articles in LWW journals if the desired content can no longer be accessed. Information on this can be found on the above-mentioned page.

Alternative Open Access publishing

Researchers can still publish in hybrid journals without charges, but articles will not be made Open Access by the publisher. We advise not paying the costs for the Open Access article fees and instead recommend that authors first publish their articles as ‘closed access’ and then upload the accepted manuscript version to ZORA. After the embargo period, the article becomes freely accessible. This Green Open Access option (self-archiving) enables free secondary publication of the accepted version without additional fees. Here you can find details on the conditions of Wolters Kluwer
