The annual quota for Open Access in American Chemical Society (ACS) and Wiley journals for the year 2024 has been reached. ACS and Wiley no longer offer the option to publish Open Access under the agreements until the end of 2024. Self-archiving (Green Open Access) of the manuscript version in the institutional repository is still possible free of charge. A new article quota for the agreement with ACS will be available from January 2025. The current agreement with Wiley ends on 31.12.2024. The negotiations by swissuniversities with Wiley for a new agreement from 2025 are still ongoing.
The annual quota for Open Access (OA) articles in American Chemical Society (ACS) journals has been fully utilized for 2024. As of now, articles accepted by ACS journals will not be eligible for OA publication free of charge until December 31, 2024. Authors will be notified to either pay an OA article processing charge (APC) or publish their article as closed access via Green Open Access.
The OA quota will be renewed for articles accepted after January 1, 2025.
ACS offers a “zero-embargo green open access” option, which allows authors to make accepted manuscripts available as OA immediately upon acceptance, for an «Article Development Charge» (ADC)» of USD 2’500. We strongly advise against choosing this option and paying the associated fee.
As an alternative, we recommend authors publish their articles as closed access and then upload the accepted manuscript version to the UZH institutional repository ZORA, where it can be shared with the world after a 12-month embargo period. This approach enables authors to make their accepted version available as Open Access without incurring additional fees.
For articles resulting from Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)-funded projects, where the accepted manuscript must be made openly available immediately after publication, we recommend using the Rights Retention Strategy. This strategy is ideally applied at the time of submission to secure author rights and ensure compliance with SNSF’s OA mandate. Further information is available on our Publishing Contract and Author Rights.
The annual quota for Open Access articles in the journals of Wiley has also been reached on November 04, 2024. As a result, accepted articles in hybrid journals can no longer be published Open Access under the Read&Publish agreement with Wiley.
We recommend publishing the articles as closed access and deposit the manuscript version in the repository ZORA. The accepted manuscript of the article can be made freely available after an embargo period. Further information on the conditions can be found on the following page Wiley’s Self-Archving policy.
For articles resulting from Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)-funded projects please consider the SNSF guidelines mentioned above.
The negotiations by swissuniversities with Wiley for a new agreement for 2025 are still ongoing.
