Read & Publish Agreement with Wiley

Laptop

In June 2025, swissuniversities signed a comprehensive Open Access agreement with Wiley for 2025 to 2027. The cost-neutral integration of Wiley's Gold OA portfolio into the agreement means that researchers from Swiss universities and participating organisations will be able to publish Open Access in Wiley's entire portfolio in future.

Full Reading Access and Publishing in the Entire Wiley Portfolio Included

The Read & Publish agreement, which runs from 2025 to 2027, replaces the previous agreement, which expired at the end of 2024. It guarantees full reading access for members of the University of Zurich to the entire Wiley journal portfolio with retroactive effect from 1 January 2025. In addition, the agreement allows Open Access publishing in the approximately 1'900 Wiley journals at no additional cost. The agreement provides for a quota of articles that meets (Gold OA journals) or exceeds (Hybrid journals) the expected demand of Swiss researchers. This means that the publication fees, which were previously paid decentralized, will be financed centrally by the institutions in future.

Articles that are published in hybrid journals from 1 January 2025 onward can now be published Open Access free of charge under the terms of the agreement. The costs for articles in Gold Open Access journals, that were published after 1 January 2025, can also be covered, provided the corresponding invoices have not yet been paid. We therefore continue to recommend not to pay any APC invoices. Wiley will contact authors directly if their publication is covered by the agreement.

Regulation on the Use of AI

The agreement now also explicitly regulates the use of artificial intelligence (AI) with licensed content and offers members of Swiss universities the greatest possible freedom in the use of AI tools to analyse Wiley publications in research, teaching and innovation.

Publisher Negotiations

The negotiations with Wiley took place as part of the second round of negotiations with publishers (‘Big Deal Negotiations’), which has now been concluded. Open Access negotiations with major scientific publishers are an important part of the Swiss Open Access strategy, which pursues the vision of making publicly funded research results directly accessible to all free of charge. The agreement can be viewed on the homepage of the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries.

You find further information at Negotiations with Wiley and objectives of the negotiation mandate. Information on Article fee funding are listed under “Wiley” at the UB website.
