No deal situation for a Read&Publish agreement with Wiley for 2025

The negotiations between swissuniversities and the publisher Wiley have not yet led to a result. As of 1 January 2025, a situation without a contract is emerging, with consequences on both reading access and Open Access publishing in Wiley journals. The negotiating team continues to endeavour to reach an agreement.

Since mid-2021, researchers at UZH and the affiliated university hospitals have been able to publish Open Access in the hybrid Wiley journals without having to pay article fees. This applies until the contractually agreed article quota is reached - which is already the case this year. The so-called Read&Publish Agreement also secures the right to read the publisher's journal portfolio.

Negotiations between swissuniversities and Wiley

The negotiations between swissuniversities and Wiley began in spring 2024. They are part of the National Open Access Strategy for Switzerland and are based on the LIBER Principles for Open Access Negotiations. The current offer does not yet meet the requirements of the negotiation mandate, the negotiating team announced on 16 December 2024, and efforts are continuing to find a solution. As the current agreement with Wiley ends on 31 December 2024, preparations have been made for a no-contract situation from 2025.

Possibility of a no-contract situation in 2025 - What are the implications?

Reading access

Reading access to the current volumes of the journals is expected to be possible until the end of January 2025. As soon as this access is deactivated, UZH researchers will still be able to access

  • Articles published until the end of 2024,
  • Content to which UZH has permanent access rights,
  • E-books and databases of the publisher - they are not part of the negotiations and remain accessible.

Publishing Open Access articles

Authors from UZH and the affiliated university hospitals can continue to publish in Wiley's hybrid journals - however, the open access publication fees will not be covered until an agreement is reached. Articles can be published Open Access free of charge via the Green Road. We recommend that you do not pay the Open Access article fees.

Alternative access and ordering methods

We have put together some alternatives that members of UZH and the affiliated university hospitals can use to access the articles they need. Browser extensions and search engines that help you find Open Access versions can be found on our website: No Access? Your Options

In addition, the interlibrary loan service of the UB and the ZB is available to you free of charge for articles in Wiley journals if the desired content can no longer be accessed. Information on this can be found on the above-mentioned page.

Alternative Open Access publishing

We recommend that authors first publish their articles as ‘closed access’ and then upload the accepted manuscript version to ZORA . After the embargo period, the article becomes freely accessible. This Green Open Access option (self-archiving) enables free secondary publication of the accepted version without additional fees. Here you can find details of Wiley's conditions
